NO FARE INCREASE – OPERATORS WARNED ABOUT OVERCHARGING

Posted on February 22, 2022

Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon. Audley Shaw, is clarifying that he did not make an announcement of a fare increase.

Speaking at the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) and VM group National Pension Fund scheme for the island public transport operators recently, Minister Shaw made commitments to review the current fares and indicated that there may be another adjustment in due course.

The Transport Minister is further warning public passenger vehicle (PPV) operators who have hiked up bus and taxi fares to cease and desist, as there has been no approval for a fare increase since the 15% increase on August 16, 2021.

The Ministry has been receiving numerous complaints from members of the public about overcharging from PPV operators. This practice is illegal and operators who continue to do so will be prosecuted. The fare for commuters throughout the island should only reflect the 15% increase which was approved.

Persons may access the fare schedules on the Ministry of Transport and Mining website at www.mtm.gov.jm or the Transport Authority’s website at www.ta.org.jm.

Commuters are further encouraged to report overcharging to the Transport Authority at 888-991-5687 or WhatsApp 876-551-8196 and the Ministry at 876-754-1900.

The Ministry of Transport and Mining is, as always, open to dialogue at the conference table and welcomes any suggestion put forward to advance the nation.
