The Black River Bridge in Portland was declared open by Minister of Transport and Works, Mike Henry, and members of the NWA team recently. The bridge, which cost 105 million dollars, was rebuilt under the R.A. Murray Bridge Rehabilitation Programme, and forms part of the overall drive to repair, remodel and rebuild bridges across the island. Speaking at the Opening ceremony recently, Minister of Transport and Works, Mike Henry, underscores the Ministry’s and the Government’s thrust at realizing a multi-modal form of transportation across the island, and that safe and effective bridges will ultimately play a major role in ensuring seamless movement across the island. He said that notwithstanding the high volume of rainfall that Portland receives, it is paramount that the road infrastructure continues to improve, as the old bridge was heavily eroded and was a threat to safety. He, however, urged the residents and road users to play an active role in ensuring the longevity of the structure.
“We are very pleased to officially commission the new structure and the supporting facilities into operation today, bringing relief and more comfort to the people who routinely travel along this corridor. It is important to note that despite the financial challenges that the government has faced over recent times, many costly but very important works like these are still being done in recognition of our mandate to respond effectively to the needs of the communities and the population in general.”
The work included bridge foundation excavation, abutment foundation works, launching of bridge girders, installation of bridge deck forms, installation of bridge deck, construction of sidewalks, approach roads protective works and road markings.
