The spanking refurbished Ring Road at the University Hospital of the West Indies was declared opened on April 8, 2014.

The road which was completed at a cost of $62.5M was a collaborative effort between the government and the private sector. (Many of the companies involved were recognised at the Opening Ceremony.) The Project was completed within the requisite time and within budget.

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony, Health Minister Dr. Fenton Ferguson said that the completion of the Project represented the ‘best of Jamaica’. He said that the collaboration between the private and public sectors demonstrated leadership and expressed the wish that other aspects of the hospital’s operations would benefit from collaborative approaches to solutions especially against a background where the hospital was a major landmark in the country.

For his part, Transport, Works & Housing Minister Dr. the Hon. Omar Davies said that he found it very easy to lend his assistance to the road refurbishment Project especially after he had reason to be a patient in the institution. He said he received excellent patient care while there and as a result was very pleased to be associated with the initiative.

The Ring Road at the University Hospital of the West Indies had been in a poor state of road worthiness for a very long time. Following the intervention of Minister Omar Davies, Professor Gordon Shirley, head of the Port Authority of Jamaica, Mr. E.G Hunter, CEO of the NWA, a Committee was formed which saw to the eventual successful rehabilitation of the corridor.
