Trelawny Residents Benefit Under Collaborative Housing Project

Four persons received keys to their own homes during a ceremony under the Collaborative Housing Project, held in Braco, Trelawny on Thursday June 4, 2015.

The project which is a partnership among the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing through the JEEP Secretariat; Food For the Poor (FFP) and the PetroCaribe Development Fund will see the construction of 100 two-bedroom units per month.

During the ceremony, Executive Director of Food For the Poor, David Mair announced that since the start of the project, over 2,400 houses had been constructed across the island. Of this figure, 53 were been built in Trelawny.  

Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing, Dr. Morais Guy lauded the partnership and reiterated the government’s commitment to ‘increase the ownership society.’ He further stated that, through this collaboration, the government contributes US$3,200 to each unit built.

For her part, Project Director for JEEP, Mrs. Carolyn Gardner said,  “there is more to be done and the JEEP Secretariat is committed to the task of providing housing units to those in need as are all our partners”.

“I am thankful to Food For the Poor and JEEP for giving me and my family a place to live”, was the sentiment expressed by Ms. Christine Jenkins after receiving the keys to her home during the Handing-over ceremony.

Each house will provide a comfortable living space, proper bathroom facilities with a flush toilet and shower, a kitchenette and access to solar energy.

The Collaborative Housing Project which started in 2012, commits to constructing 100 two – bedroom wooden units per month or 1200 units per year.
