SAFETY AND SECURITY AT THE HEART OF REMOVAL OF TINTS – SSP CALVIN ALLEN

Safety and security concerns are at the heart of removal of tints from public passenger vehicles according to SSP Calvin Allen who made the disclosure at a Media Briefing at the Transport Authority on Monday, February 13, 2017.

Last week, the Prime Minister, Most Honourable Andrew Holness gave instructions for the removal of tint from all public passenger motor vehicles with immediate effect. In keeping with the PM’s instructions, meetings have been held with key stakeholders of the Transport sector including the Transport Authority, the Police, the Island Traffic Authority and heads of Taxi Associations islandwide.

With immediate effect, the following will obtain as far as the directive is concerned:

MOTOR CARS

• No tints on back windscreen 

• No tint on front windscreen except for the 6 inch visor at the very top

• No tint on the windows of the driver and passenger doors

• 70% inward view or 30% grade allowed on the two back windows

COASTER BUSES

• No tint on back windscreen 

• No tint on front windscreen except for the 9 inch visor at the very top

• No tint on the glass of the windows immediately in front of the back windscreen

• No tint on the glass of the driver and passenger window at the front of the vehicle 

• No tint on the entrance door

• All other windows must allow a 70% view inwards or will be allowed a 30% grade tint

TOYOTA HIACE BUSES

• Similar to Coaster buses except that a 6 inch visor tint will be permissible on the front windscreen      

FACTORY TINTED VEHICLES

Vehicles which are imported with factory tints will be examined by the ITA to ascertain if they are compliant; if not, they will be given twelve months to become compliant or remove the vehicle from the public transport system. No public passenger vehicle will be given a Fitness Certificate if found in breach of this regulation.
