MTWH HANDS OVER BUILDING TO PORTMORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

A building which was constructed by the Housing section of the Ministry of Transport, Works & Housing was handed over to the Portmore Community College on Wednesday, November 5, 2014.

The building which is 549 foot squared Post and Panel Building will be used as the Registry of the Institution. The Ministry also undertook the electrical installation works associated with its construction. Contract sum for the building was $2,993,628.75 and the Contractor was JAJ Davis Haulage and Construction Ltd; the Ministry of Transport, Works & Housing acted as Project Manager.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Minister without portfolio in charge of Housing in the Ministry, Hon. Dr. Morais Guy said that the initiative was a clear demonstration of ‘not only joined up government but also is one that spans different administrations.” “This demonstration of collaboration between different areas of government can only redound to the benefit of the country ultimately. In fact, ladies and gentlemen, I would go one step further to say that this model of development will form one of the major planks of moving our nation forward,” Minister Guy said.

Also speaking at the ceremony was Mr. Fitz Jackson, the first Chairman of the institution. He chronicled the history of the College from the early days. He noted that the idea was started parallel with the Portmore Municipality and encouraged the model of ‘starting with what you have until you get to where you want’. He paid tribute to the institution’s first principal, Ms Whylie who was also present at the handing over ceremony.

For his part, MP for the area within which the College falls, Hon. Colin Fagan said that the College benefitted persons from not only the confines Of Poprtmore but as far away as Old Harbour where the institution now has a campus. He said that as MP he would look at the needs of the institution with a view to seeing what assistance he could provide. He congratulated all associated with its construction, noting that they now provide accreditation at the Certificate, Diploma and degree level.
